Reducing pipe (large and small end) is a type of pipe fitting used for pipe diameter reduction. The commonly used forming processes are shrinkage compression, expansion compression, or shrinkage plus expansion compression. Stamping can also be used for certain specifications of reducing pipes.

a. Shrinkage/expansion forming

The reduction forming process of reducing diameter pipes involves placing a pipe blank with the same diameter as the large end of the reducing diameter pipe into a forming die, and pressing it along the axial direction of the pipe blank to make the metal move along the mold cavity and shrink into shape. According to the size of the reducer, it can be divided into one press forming or multiple press forming. The following figure is a schematic diagram of the reduction forming of a concentric reducer.

Expanding forming is the process of using a tube blank with a diameter smaller than the large end of the reducing tube, and using an internal punch to expand along the inner diameter of the tube blank. The expansion process mainly solves the problem of large diameter reducing pipes that are difficult to form through reduction. Sometimes, expansion and reduction methods are combined according to the needs of materials and product forming.

In the process of reducing or expanding deformation and pressing, cold or hot pressing is determined based on different materials and diameter changes. In general, cold pressing is preferred, but for cases where severe work hardening is caused by multiple diameter changes, wall thickness deviation, or alloy steel materials, hot pressing is recommended.

b. Stamping forming

In addition to using steel pipes as raw materials to produce reducers, some specifications of reducers can also be produced using stamping forming technology using steel plates. The shape of the stamping die used for stretching refers to the design of the inner surface size of the reducing pipe, and the steel plate after cutting is stamped and stretched into shape using the stamping die.
