Introduction and Testing Principles of Y-type Filters

Introduction and Testing Principles of Y-type Filters

  • 2023/07/11

1. Introduction to Y-type Filter

Y-type filters are an indispensable filtering device in pipeline systems that transport media. Y-type filters are usually installed at the inlet of pressure reducing valves, relief valves, constant water level valves, or other equipment to remove impurities from the media and protect the normal use of valves and equipment. The Y-type filter has the characteristics of advanced structure, low resistance, and convenient discharge. The suitable media for Y-type filters can be water, oil, and gas. Generally, the water network is 18-30 mesh, the ventilation network is 10-100 mesh, and the oil network is 100-480 mesh.

Y-type filters (water filters) belong to the pipeline coarse filter series and can also be used for filtering large particles of gas or other media. When installed on pipelines, they can remove large solid impurities in the fluid, enabling machine equipment (including compressors, pumps, etc.) and instruments to work and operate normally, achieving stable process and ensuring safe production. The Y-shaped filter (water filter) produced by Shanghai Hugong Valve Factory can be customized according to customer specific requirements (special pressure, special diameter). The Y-type filter (water filter) has the advantages of simple production, convenient installation and cleaning, and large pollutant capacity.

2. Testing principle of Y-type filter

The principle of bubble point method testing: When the filter membrane and filter element are completely soaked in a certain solution, and then pressurized on one side through a gas source (the instrument has an intake control system that can stabilize the pressure and adjust the intake), as the pressure increases, the gas is released from one side of the filter membrane, indicating the appearance of bubbles of varying sizes and quantities on one side of the membrane. The corresponding pressure value is determined by the instrument to be the bubble point.

Diffusion flow testing principle: Diffusion flow testing refers to when the gas pressure is 80% of the bubble point value of the filter element, a large amount of gas perforation has not yet occurred, but a small amount of gas first dissolves into the liquid phase diaphragm, and then diffuses from that liquid phase to the gas phase on the other side. This part of gas is called diffusion flow.

Why is the method of diffusion flow better? The bubbling point value is only a qualitative value, and the process from the beginning of bubbling to the final group bubbling is a relatively long one, which cannot be accurately quantified. The measurement of diffusion flow value is a quantitative value that not only accurately determines the integrity of the filter, but also reflects issues such as membrane porosity, flow rate, and effective filtration area. This is why foreign manufacturers now use diffusion flow method to test integrity.

Water intrusion method testing principle: Water intrusion method is specifically used for testing hydrophobic filter elements. The hydrophobic membrane resists water, and the smaller the pore size, the greater the pressure required to squeeze water into the hydrophobic membrane. So, under a certain pressure, measure the water flow rate squeezed into the filter membrane to determine the pore size of the filter element.
