Basic knowledge about low-temperature bearings

Low temperature bearings are not bearings that operate stably in high temperature environments, but rather refer to the design of special materials and structures to reduce friction coefficient, thereby reducing friction and heat generation, and maintaining low temperature during long-term operation of bearings.


Bearings with operating temperatures below -60 ℃ are low-temperature bearings. Mainly used in various liquid pumps, such as liquefied natural gas pumps, liquid nitrogen (hydrogen, oxygen) pumps, butane pumps, liquid pumps for rocket missiles, spacecraft, etc.


Bearing operating temperature is an important indicator for world bearing brands:
The operating temperature of low-temperature bearings reflects the material technology and processing level of bearing processing. Its measurement is mainly based on the temperature difference between the outer ring of the bearing and the injected cooling oil during operation.

Lower operating temperature means longer bearing life and higher performance. Worldrenowned bearing manufacturers, relying on their respective advantages, strive to achieve comparative advantages in low-temperature bearings in multiple fields. Taking Timken self-aligning roller bearings as an example, after strict testing, the operating temperature of this type of product by the company is about 15.5 degrees Celsius lower than that of similar products in the market, while other internationally renowned brands are above 19 degrees Celsius.


Low temperature bearings are mostly single row deep groove ball bearings and cylindrical roller bearings:

For bearings that experience jamming at low temperatures, the external factor is the change in temperature, while the internal factor is the different thermal expansion coefficients of the shaft, frame, and material. When the temperature range is large, the shrinkage rate of different materials varies, leading to a smaller gap and jamming. Therefore, for equipment with a wide range of work, including those used at low temperatures, it is necessary to calculate the expansion coefficient of the material, and try to use materials with similar expansion coefficients as much as possible to achieve better results.

In addition, in structural design, try to avoid using a tapered roller bearing at each end of the shaft. In this structure, the longer the distance between two bearings, the greater the possibility of jamming. If a pair of tapered bearings are installed at one end of the shaft, as the positioning of the shaft, the axial movement of the shaft is constrained, and the other end of the shaft is used together with a rolling bearing to limit only radial force, which can move axially within a certain range of axial temperature in the axial direction.
